Books I Reviewed

“Lovely, Dark and Deep” by Amy McNamara

This novel can be described as its perfectly noted title. It is lovely, dark and deep. It is filed under Young Adult Contemporary, but it reads well enough for an adult as well.

Lovely Dark and Deep.jpgThis story follows Wren Wells from her point of view just after she experiences the loss of her boyfriend in a tragic car accident – one that she was also in, but she survived. She has a hard time with her grief and decides to escape that part of her life and retreats to her father’s home in the far-north woods of Maine to be alone. She knows he’s always gone for his work, and this is perfect for her; She will not have to deal with anyone while she is there.

However, she is quickly proven wrong when she meets Cal, a guy that lives not far from her father’s home and dealing with his own set of issues. As they set out to build on an unexpected relationship, Wren struggles with coming out of her own personal isolation and dealing with the real world again.

I fell in love with Amy’s writing from the start. There is such a great amount of emotion that is described in a poetic way that I found it relatable and touching. The characters in the story are very likable, and I found myself rooting for all of them in their own right.

The only downfall to the story is that there is no real climactic revelation in the story. While there are a few ups and downs that keep the story flowing well, there is nothing too gripping to hold onto.

With that being said, I don’t think this story needed that anyway. I recommend this read for writers. I recommend it for people who just enjoy a good emotional book that wants to see characters grow.

I wouldn’t recommend this for young adults who crave action or romances that will keep you glued to the pages. This is not that story. But I still felt engaged in the reading. While there is a romance involved, the companionship and conflict in moving on and accepting new possibilities is the heart of this romance.

I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars! I would definitely read another book by this author! If you get a chance to read this or have already read it, let me know your thoughts in the comments below ! 🙂 Happy Reading!
